Boxable.co.uk Takes Center Stage in Delga Press’s Digital Transformation
For over 60 years, Delga Press, an integral part of The Meliora Group, has been a key player in the bespoke packaging and printing industry in the UK. In response to dynamic shifts in markets for CDs, DVDs, and vinyl, Delga Press has continually adapted and evolved. Now, at its headquarters in Rochester, Kent, the company has taken a pioneering step into the digital era with the launch of Boxable.co.uk, an on-demand packaging solution catering specifically to boutique businesses and small enterprises.
Boxable, launched from beta in May 2023, provides a tailored digital workflow for folding carton packaging, allowing customers to benefit from a user-friendly e-commerce platform. Customers, seamlessly upload their artwork, while the system intelligently calculates box types and associated costs, according to specified measurements and weight tolerances.
The production process is equally efficient, with printing done on an HP Indigo 12000HD and digital cutting and creasing performed on the Highcon Euclid III digital finishing system. The tool-free laser cutting and creasing capabilities of the Highcon system not only align seamlessly with Boxable’s business model, ensuring swift and efficient fulfillment of small orders, but also allow for intricate designs that were previously impossible with traditional tools.
Putting the Customer First
Boxable is more than just another service, it represents a customer-centric solution to customers that could not afford, and did not need, a full service with an account manager for short runs of packaging. Oliver Kleinman, the Head of Marketing at The Meliora Group, recalls the inception of Boxable during a visit to Highcon’s headquarters in Israel in the summer of 2022. The visionary cooperation, led by Ian Conetta, Group Managing Director of The Meliora Group, tapped into emerging trends of e-commerce platforms and automated ordering.
“We were exploring ways to optimize the capacity of our Highcon and HP Indigo technology and approach new markets with a new business proposition,” said Kleinman. “Extensive market research showed that our technology was well-suited for SMEs, sole traders and artisanal businesses like candle makers, wine producers and cosmetics.”
The journey from Boxable’s inception to its release was a significant undertaking, involving the development of a tailored e-commerce platform, seamless CRM integration, and the installation of a Scodix embellishing press and a Heidelberg folder-gluer. In parallel, Delga Press created an entirely new brand image and website. Complementing this transformation, the company adopted a fresh B2C marketing strategy leveraging collaboration with digital influencers and helping small businesses for major e-commerce events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, among the busiest times of the year for e-commerce.
The introduction of Boxable has positioned Delga Press to serve new sectors such as beverages, nutraceuticals, supplement tablets, food, and cosmetics. The inaugural transaction for Boxable, fulfilling a swatch box order for an interior design company in Notting Hill, London, the very next day, showcased Delga Press’s capability to efficiently meet short-run orders with minimum order quantities.
Kleinman expresses his enthusiasm for the growing partnership with Highcon, emphasizing the gradual transition of many analog jobs to digital: "We have been working closely with the Highcon team for almost three years. The level of support and relationship we've received has been truly exceptional, and everyone has been incredibly helpful. Highcon’s guidance has been invaluable in refining techniques, ink selection, and paper choice, ultimately leading to remarkable results."
As Kleinman concludes, Boxable’s launch, and success were strategic moves orchestrated by Delga Press to maximize the effectiveness of its digital technologies. The decision to delve into e-commerce, after extensive market research, was a well-founded strategy to showcase capabilities and leverage the Highcon system effectively.
